Rob- Introduction- I’m Rob Morse and welcome to episode 71 of Self-Defense Gun Stories. This podcast is for people who think they might want a firearm.. and those who already have one. We’re joined this week by self-defense instructor Robyn Street.
Hi, Robyn. I know you were busy last week.
Robyn- Hi, Rob.
Hi to our new listeners, and welcome back to our regular listeners. We report and analyze three examples of armed civilian defense. We hope you use these reports as part of your exercise program.. to use your imagination today so you can defend the people you care about tomorrow. Robyn- Our first story took place last week in Dothan, Alabama.
Rob- First story- Are you armed at church late on a Sunday night?
You’re working late. It’s 10:30 at night and you’re preparing for a youth field trip that starts in a few hours. Almost everyone has left the church and gone home. You hear someone outside your office. A few seconds later, a 26 year old man with a knife comes through your door and tells you to hand over your money. You’re armed. You stand up. You reach for your wallet with one hand and reach for your firearm with your other hand. You shoot the robber once in the chest. The robber runs before you can shoot again. Then, you call police. The police find the robber in the parking lot. They say the robber attacked someone else in the church a few minutes before he attacked you. The robber was a convicted violent felon.
Robyn- Secure your environment – lock the doors at home and at the office
Rob- Churches have an open door policy.
Robyn- Was it a pattern to stay late and alone before a trip.
Rob- large churches have security.
Robyn- Initial advantage went to the bad guy.
Robyn- But…Good guy had a gun and successfully reacted to the situation.
Robyn- Good discipline to stop after the threat no longer existed. After only 1 shot that would be difficult to determine.
Robyn- Psychological stop but it worked.
Rob- What if the church was a gun free zone?
Robyn- Go find another church.
Robyn- Our second story happened last week north of Spokane, Washington.
Rob- Second story- Do you have to call your dad to ask if you can use one of his guns?
You’re a 17 year old girl sitting in your room late on a monday morning. You live out in the country with your mom and dad. Your boyfriend calls to tell you he saw a lot of police on the nearby roads. The police are looking for a fleeing felon in your area. You call your dad and explain what is going on. You ask if you can borrow one of his guns..the one you have have shot many times before. He says yes, so you load his revolver and put it near your bed.
A few minutes later you hear the sounds downstairs of someone opening the back door. You hear someone walk across the wooden floor and start up the stairs. Your mom and dad are at work, so you grab your dad’s gun and slide into a corner away from your bedroom door. A stranger opens your door and sticks his head inside your room. He is looking down the barrel of your gun. You yell, “Get out of my house!” The robber leaves. You slowly follow him as he leaves the way he came. You call police, but it takes them quite a while to get to your house.
They show you a picture, and you identify your intruder as their fleeing felon.
Robyn – I am so glad to hear that the father had been working with her. She was familiar with it and respected it.
Rob- A single action, long barrel, 22 revolver?
Robyn- I would not be my first choice but if that is what she had and what she knew how to use. It obviously was sufficient in this case.
Rob- Old enough to be left alone, then old enough to protect themselves.
Robyn- Again I am going to start with lock your doors and windows.
Robyn- Just because heard someone in the house target identification is so important. She “knew” her mom and dad were at work. But what is one of them had come home to be with her or if her boyfriend had come over to protect her?
Robyn- I am glad that she decided to position herself so that she was a small target in a corner away from the door.
Robyn- Again this was a psychological stop. In this case she did not even have to fire a shot. Great discipline on her part.
Robyn- I would make sure that there was plenty of distance between them as she followed the felon out of her house.
Robyn- Great job calling the police.
Robyn- I hope that she locked the doors after he was gone.
Robyn- Our third story happened last week in Rancho Cucamonga, California.
Rob- Third story- Are you armed when you’re at home just after dawn?
You’re at home on a Saturday morning, a day when most of us can sleep in. You’re woken up by a strange sound from your garage. You hear it again. You get up and grab your gun. You open the back door to see someone sitting in your car. You yell for him to leave. He does. He gets out of your car..and then starts walking toward you with a large knife in his hand. You shoot him twice in the chest. Now he runs to a waiting get-away car. You call police. They arrest him at the hospital and find narcotics in his car. The robber has a criminal history and is out on parole.
Robyn- OK once again harden your environment. Lock your office, lock your house and lock your garage.
Robyn- If the robber is in the garage and you are in your house. I would suggest staying in your house and calling the police. Position yourself to defend yourself if necessary. By opening his door to investigate what was going on in his garage the bad guy had the ability to physically get to the homeowner.
Robyn- When the robber was coming at the homeowner with a large knife, that was a deadly threat.
Robyn- Thank goodness our homeowner had his gun with him.
Robyn- The homeowner shot him twice and that was enough to stop the threat. Good for him to have the control to stop.
Robyn-Be prepared to take additional shots to defend yourself in case the robber changes his mind or his accomplices decide to continue the attack. If the robber can run, he can still attack.
Robyn- Great job calling the police.
