Episode 151 with Jeff Street

Rob- Introduction-

I’m glad you found us and welcome to episode 151 of Self-Defense Gun Stories. This podcast is for people who are curious about self-defense, and for those who are already trained. I’m your host, Rob Morse. We’re joined this week by self-defense instructor Jeff Street.

Jeff- Hi, Rob.  Heading to IALEFI International Association of Law Enforcement Firearms Instructors.

Rob- It sounds like you need a break.

Jeff- We’ll talk about recent examples where gun owners were in a life threatening situation. Were they lucky, or did they have a plan? What should we do if we were in their place? We give you the links back to the original news article in our show notes.  Our first story took place last week in Cleveland, Ohio.

Rob- First story-  Are you armed at work?

It is dark outside. You and your co-worker look up to see a man walk into your cell phone store. He says he wants to pay his bill. You walk behind the counter and ask for his phone number. The customer takes a gun out of his pocket, points the gun at you and your co-worker and tells both of you not to move. You’re being robbed.

You have your Ohio concealed carry permit. You’ve taken self-defense training. You’re armed. You open the cash drawer and step to the side. You wait your turn until the robber’s attention is somewhere else. You draw your pistol and fire three times. The robber drops his gun and falls to the floor. You stop shooting. You kick the robbers gun away from where he is lying behind the counter. You back away and ask your co-worker to call 911.

Police arrest your attacker and EMTs take him to the hospital. You show the police your security video. The officers say it was clearly self-defense.

Jeff: It is good that responding officers saw it as a clear self defence scenario. The Attackers attention was divided between the 2 employees. Some people turn a defensive shooting into murder. What tools to you have at hand? Good defense, and didn’t chase. Take your turn.

Robbing someone is hard. You have to watch two people and take their valuables. Our defender waited until the robber was looking away and shot him. He kept shooting until the threat went away.

Rob- What would you like us to do in a similar situation?

Jeff- Ask everyone in the store to call 911. Stick your head out the door and shout to everyone that there has been a shooting and to call 911. Then lock your door and call the police.

The security video saved this man tens of thousands of dollars in legal fees to prove he was acting in self defense. So did the people who called 911 and became recorded witnesses that the police can contact for statements.
Rob- I read other stories like this in my local paper. Is this story unusual?

Jeff- Half of attacks are in public. Usually parking lots. A quarter are where you live, a quarter are where you work, and a violent crime is committed about every thirty seconds.

Our second story happened last week in Saint Louis, Missouri.

Rob- Second Story-  Are you armed at home?

You and your boyfriend are getting ready for work. You’ve dressed your three year old son and he is getting breakfast. You hear a crash from the front door and there is a stranger standing in your house. You shout at him to leave. He attacks you. You shout again and your boyfriend rushes into the room. Your boyfriend grabs the stranger. You run to your bedroom and grab your gun. The two men are fighting when your return. You shoot your attacker. Now he lets go of your boyfriend.

You put the gun away and take care of your son. Your boyfriend calls police.

Jeff: Could be a tough shot could be an easy shot.

It would be better if the front door was hardened.

Better if both adults were POGO. Work might be a non-permissive environment.

Jeff- Stay in the fight. You’re hit. Your boyfriend is hit, but you don’t give up because your son is in the house and you must protect him. She got her gun and used it. It isn’t easy to join a fight.

Rob- What do you tell your students to do?

Jeff-  POGO. Both of you are trained.

Both of you are armed. Should you invite someone to live in your house if you wouldn’t trust them with a gun?

Rob- If your roommate calls police, what will they say?

Jeff- Talk to your roommates about armed defense. What they say can put an innocent person in prison.

Our third story happened last week outside of Detroit, Michigan

Rob- First this message from my friends at Faster Colorado.

Rob- Third story- Are you armed at work?

It is 5 o’clock in the evening. Lots of customers are coming and going through your gas station/ convenience store. You look up to see a man wearing a mask and with a gun in his hand. He tells you not to move. He tells the customers to raise their hands, and then to hand over their wallets, purses, and cell phones.

You’re armed. You step behind the cash register and draw your firearm. You shoot your attacker several times. Your attacker runs from the store.

You call police. The police find the robber outside and find his gun inside your store where he dropped it.

Jeff: Hands up now give me your wallet? Hands have to come to waist level, OK. MUltiple victims and 1 attacker. He is surrounded.  Wait your turn. This man protected himself and the customers in his store. He might have stopped mass murder.

Rob- How did he do that?

Jeff- He was armed. You only have the tools on your body.  Not the ones at home or back in the gun safe. He waited his turn. He stopped the threat. He stopped shooting when the threat was over and he didn’t chase the robber outside.

Rob- What would you like your students to do?

Jeff- Practice hitting a moving target as you move to a position of advantage where you can’t be shot. Did the store have a cooler with metal walls? Did he have bullet proof plastic in front of the sales counter?

Once the attacker runs away, then ask if any customers are injured. Ask them to move to the back of the store so they are away from where the attacker ran. Lock your doors. Put your gun into your holster. Ask the customers if they need first aid. Ask all the customers to call 911 if they are physically able to do so. Wait for the police. Give the police your security video.

Jeff- Our forth story took place last week in Chicago, Illinois.

Rob- Fourth story- Are you armed as you drive to work?

It is between four and five in the morning. You’re driving downtown before the rush hour traffic gets too heavy. You’re waiting in a turn lane, when someone drives into the back of your car.  You turn off the car and go outside to look at the damage. The other driver gets out of his car as well..except he has a gun in his hand. He points the gun at you and tells you to give him the keys to your car. You’re being carjacked at gunpoint.

You have your Illinois concealed carry permit. You’re armed. You lean into your car. The robber climbs into the passenger seat. You draw your firearm and shoot your attacker.

You back out of the car, run across the street, and call 911.

Jeff: Watch your mirrors. Drive defensively. If you are driving defensively and this still happens your guard will be activated. Put distance and obstacles between you and the other driver.  If you see the other driver pounding on his dash and screaming even before he gets out of the car you might want to lock yourself into your car.

Jeff- Defend yourself, move to a position of safety and then call the police. Great job.

Rob- We’re allowed to run from the scene of the crime?

Jeff- CYA stands for can you articulate.

Jeff- What do you do with your gun as you run into a store and announce that you’ve been attacked? You need a holster! It gives you a place to put your firearm. Study them. Buy one. Live with it every day.
