Episode 36 with Tony Simon

Introduction- Rob- Welcome to episode 36 of Self-Defense Gun Stories.  This podcast is now part of the Self-Defense Radio Network.  I’m Rob Morse and we’re joined this week by self-defense instructor  Tony Simon.  How have you been?Tony Simon

Tony – Hi, Rob.  I want to welcome our new listeners, and say welcome back our regular listeners. Together, Rob and I report and analyze examples of armed civilian defense.  We inform you about the news, and I hope we inspire you to defend the people you care about.

Tony- Our first story took place this month in Florida.

Rob- first story- Are you armed when you stop for gasoline late at night?  A man and woman drove into a gas station in Vero Beach, Florida.  A homeless man sleeping at the gas station woke up as they arrived.  The homeless man accused the couple of stealing his property.  The couple got back in their car and started to leave when the homeless man reached into the car through an open driver’s side window.  The homeless man grabbed the driver and threatened him with a four inch knife.  The driver drew his firearm and shot his attacker.

The homeless man had been released from jail the day before.  His arrest record includes striking a law enforcement officer, aggravated assault with a deadly weapon and public intoxication.

Rob- We can’t always see everyone around a gas station as we pull in late at night.

Tony- Gas stations are places where our attention is usually focused on filling the tank, we need to take in our surroundings. Bad guys know that people are distracted at the pumps.

Rob- We spend a lot of time in our cars.

Tony- We see our cars as a “safe place” because we are in a closed secured environment while driving but at a gas station you are not in your car you are near your car. You have a limited field of view standing between your car and the pumps with the fuel hose cutting off one avenue of retreat. Be aware of your vulnerability in that position.

Rob- Gas stations used to be “gun free zones” in some states.Tony-

Tony- Our second story took place in Colorado.

Rob- Second Story-  Are you armed at home when you have a friend over?  A woman in Hooper, Colorado invited a friend to live with her.  The friend was fleeing from her boyfriend.  The friend had taken out a restraining order.  That didn’t stop the boyfriend from showing up.  The homeowner told the boyfriend to leave and called police.  The boyfriend pointed a rifle at the homeowner.  The homeowner had a rifle of her own and shot the ex-boyfriend. The boyfriend’s rifle was a bb gun.  The boyfriend died at the scene.  The police investigated the shooting and refused to prosecute the homeowner.

Tony – It seems our theme today is crazy people. Be careful when getting involved in another couples’ domestic disputes it can be very dangerous.

Rob- Distance of handgun vs long gun.

Tony- Our last story took place in Texas.

Rob- Third story- Are you armed at your dentist’s office?  A woman was leaving her dentist’s office in Houston Texas.  She was attacked by a naked man as she walked from the office to her car that was parked in the parking lot.  The woman ran back into the dentist’s office and her attacker followed her.  The victim hid in the office behind a locked door along with the office staff.  The attacker tried to kick through the locked door before the attacker jumped over the reception desk.  The attacker chased the dentist from the building.  The dentists told the attacker to stop, but the attacker advanced on the dentist. The dentist drew his firearm and shot his attacker one time.

Relatives of the attacker said he was high on PCP.. again.

Tony-  Many people say that they will only carry their gun when they go somewhere dangerous but I don’t think anyone imagines that they will be chased by a naked man through their dentist office. Pants on, gun on.

Rob- anesthesia?

Tony-drugs and druggies are everywhere.

Exit-  Rob- That wraps up this episode. Tony, thank you for helping me today.  Where can our listeners find out more about you?
